The category of a template and how it is used is controlled by adjusting the resource's properties, including single or multiple use, mapping and cascading tags.
Property levels
For template properties within a workbook, please see Workbook properties.
A one-page template had two levels of permissions:
- Block
Set-up each content block on the page with individual settings. - Template
Set-up the overall page's settings to control how it is used.
To access:
Only an owner or collaborator of a template resource can change its properties.
- From the Resource Store, click the template title and choose Edit resource
- Click the Properties button to open the sidebar.
- Click Block or Template to select between options.
Template properties are explained below. Block properties are explained in other guides.
Template category
Set the template's type to indicate its intended purpose.
The template's resource icon will correspond in the Resource Store.
![]() | Experience To record completed activities and events. |
![]() | Plan To identify goals and how to achieve them. |
![]() | Reflection To consider past events and actions. |
![]() | Talent To showcase skills and abilities. |
![]() | Feedback To assess work by yourself or others. |
![]() | Worksheet To respond to questions and tasks. |
Template usage
Set how many times the template can be used by each person. A use, known as a response, creates a new, blank asset and is saved to the Learner's Asset Store.
Single use only
The template can only be used to create one response. Attempts to create additional responses (assets) will see the user redirected to their existing saved asset in the Asset Store.
Optionally, tick Add to task list to indicate to the Learner this template must be completed.
Useful when: only one response is required or permitted.
Prompt before reuse
The template can have a specified number of responses created by each user. When reusing, the Learner is prompted to:
- Continue working on an existing response (open the asset)
- Create a new response
When the total response limit is reached, the Learner is redirected to open an existing asset only.
Useful when: a specified number of responses are required or permitted.
Allow reuse without prompting
The template can have an unlimited number of responses created.
Useful when: the number of responses is unknown or unrestricted.
Mapping
Control if the template can have assets mapped to it.
Where enabled, the template:
- must contain one or more capability blocks.
- will be set to single use only.
A template with mapping enabled cannot itself then be mapped.
Cascade tag
As with tagging an asset, a tag can be added to a resource to keep your Resource Store organised. In this case, the tag is for your individual use.
Meanwhile, a cascading tag is when the tag needs to be retained with the response when the template is used. It's particularly useful where a template is used with an activity log or collection.
Preferred options
This group controls the default settings new blocks will inherit when added to the template. Each block can still be individually changed, and existing blocks already on the page can be updated in bulk using the Apply to all button.
Include hints when an asset is viewed
Controls if the hint text added to each block is visible when the asset is previewed or viewed.
- Tick to show / Untick to hide
Use in-field hints where possible
Controls if the hint text is added beneath the block's title, or within the block's response area.
- Tick to use in-field / Untick to use beneath title
In-field hints cannot be formatted and disappear when a response is entered.
Show empty fields when an asset is viewed
If a Learner has not yet provided a response in the content block, this setting controls if the entire block is shown or hidden even though it is empty.
Previewing is to open the asset in read-only mode using the preview button, and viewing when shared with the web or with ATLAS for assessment.
